Fungal Nail Treatment

What Is A Fungal Nail?

Fungal nail infections, or onychomycosis, develop when a fungus infects a nail, often thriving in the dark, warm, and moist environment of shoes. While they can affect both fingernails and toenails, toenails are more commonly impacted. These infections can lead to nail thickening, discolouration (yellow, white, or brown), deformation, crumbling, and splitting. Many patients seek treatment due to concerns about the nail’s appearance, the risk of spreading to other toes or family members, or pain caused by thickened nails.

Toenail fungus is uncommon in children, but its prevalence increases with age, being most common in individuals over 60 years old.

Diagnosing Fungal Nail

Several nail disorders, such as psoriasis, can mimic fungal nail infections. This is why an accurate diagnosis from your podiatrist is essential to avoid ineffective treatments. Our experienced podiatrists can often diagnose a fungal infection through a physical examination, and if necessary, a nail sample can be sent to a lab for confirmation.

Treating Fungal Nail.

Treatment options for fungal nail infections include topical medications and oral medications. These treatments work to destroy the living fungus but won’t reverse the damage already inflicted on your nail. If you’d like to restore the appearance of your nail in addition to treating the infection, further options can be discussed with your podiatrist.

Topical Medication

A medicated nail lacquer is applied to the nails daily for an extended period, often multiple times per day. There are no side effects, although care must be taken to avoid the lacquer touching the surrounding skin, as this can cause irritation. Applying these lacquers and creams can be a laborious task, and many people find it challenging to maintain consistency, especially as results are not immediate. This treatment may not be suitable for individuals who struggle to reach their feet. While this option is generally low-cost, its effectiveness may be limited due to the difficulty of the medication penetrating the nail plate or nail bed to reach all of the fungi.

Oral Medication

Oral treatments are significantly more costly than lacquers, and side effects are well documented in some individuals who take these anti-fungal medications.
